al-Itiqad wa al-Hidaya ila Sabil al-Rashad is Imam al-Bayhaqi's classical Ashari creed manual — a comprehensive presentation of Sunni theology organised by topic and anchored throughout in the Quran and the rigorously-authenticated hadith. Where many works of kalam build their arguments primarily through rational dialectic, al-Bayhaqi (himself one of the supreme Shafii hadith masters of the fifth Islamic century) builds his almost entirely through textual citation, reaching reasoned conclusions only after careful scriptural grounding. The work covers the divine essence and attributes, prophecy and miracles, the Qadar, the afterlife, the questions of faith and disbelief, and the principal positions of the Ahl al-Sunna against those of the sects.

About The Author

Imam Abu Bakr Ahmad b. al-Husayn al-Bayhaqi (384-458 AH / 994-1066 CE) was the foremost Shafii hadith master of his age in Khurasan, a student of al-Hakim al-Nisaburi and the foundational figure in the consolidation of Ashari-Shafii kalam with the hadith tradition. His al-Sunan al-Kubra is one of the largest hadith collections in the Sunni tradition; his Shuab al-Iman is the standard Sunni manual on the branches of faith; his Asma wa al-Sifat is a foundational reference for Sunni discussion of the divine attributes.

"الاعتقاد والهداية إلى سبيل الرشاد" مَتْنُ الإمام البيهقي في علم الكلام الأشعري الكلاسيكي — تَقْريرٌ شامل للعقيدة السنّية مُرَتَّباً على الأبواب وموثَّقاً في كلِّ بابٍ بالقرآن والصحيح من الحديث. حيث تَبْني كثيرٌ من كتب الكلام نِظَامها من الجَدَل العقلي، يَبْني البيهقي — وهو من أعظم محدِّثي الشافعية في القرن الخامس الهجري — كتابَه من النَّقْل، فلا يَخْلُص إلى استنتاجٍ عقلي إلا بعد تَأْسيسٍ نصّي. يَستوعب الكتابُ صفاتِ الله، والنبوّة، والمعجزات، والقَدَر، والآخرة، ومسائل الإيمان والكفر، وأقوال أهل السنّة في مقابل الفرق.

عن المؤلف

الإمام أبو بكر أحمد بن الحسين البيهقي (٣٨٤-٤٥٨ هـ) إمام محدِّثي الشافعية في عصره بخراسان، تتلمذ على الحاكم النيسابوري، وكان من أعظم الجامعين بين الحديث والكلام الأشعري. له "السنن الكبرى" من أكبر مَجاميع الحديث، و"شُعَب الإيمان"، و"الأسماء والصفات" من أمّهات المراجع.
