al-Shifa bi-Tarif Huquq al-Mustafa
About The Book
al-Shifa bi-Tarif Huquq al-Mustafa is among the most beloved devotional and theological works of the Sunni tradition โ a sustained meditation on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) organised into four major parts: his noble qualities and the divine praise of him; the rights he has upon his umma; the rulings concerning him; and what he has been protected from. Qadi Iyad of Sabta composed the work in the early sixth Islamic century, weaving together the Quran, the canonical hadith, the consensus of the Companions, and a vast tradition of Sunni learning, until the resulting book became something more than a compendium: it became the formative text of the Sunni understanding of Prophetic love and reverence.
Read continuously in Sunni circles for over eight centuries โ recited aloud in Ramadan, taught in circles of seekers, studied for ijaza by hadith scholars โ al-Shifa has been the subject of more than forty major commentaries, including those of al-Khafaji, al-Qari, and al-Khaffaji. Imam al-Subki famously held that mastery of al-Shifa was a precondition for serious teaching of the Sunni sira.
