Alfiyyat Ibn Malik is the universal foundational poem of classical Arabic grammar — a 1,002-line rajaz versification of the entire system of Arabic nahw, composed by the Andalusian master Jamal al-Din Ibn Malik in the seventh Islamic century. The poem covers every major topic — the kalima, the marfuat, the mansubat, the majrurat, the operators of nasb and jazm, the laws of agreement and governance — in tight, memorisable couplets that allow the student to carry the entire grammar of the language in his memory.

For more than seven centuries, the Alfiyya has been the universal beginner-to-intermediate matn of Arabic grammar across the Sunni world. It has generated more than fifty significant commentaries, foremost among them those of Ibn Aqil, Ibn Hisham, and al-Ushmuni. A serious student of the Arabic language commits the Alfiyya to memory and revisits it for life.

About The Author

Imam Jamal al-Din Muhammad b. Abd Allah Ibn Malik al-Andalusi (600-672 AH / 1203-1274 CE) was an Andalusian master of Arabic linguistics. Born in Jaen, he emigrated eastward and settled in Damascus where he taught and died. Beyond the Alfiyya, his al-Kafiya al-Shafiya is a longer didactic poem covering the same material with more detail; his commentaries and works on lugha and morphology remain standard references.

"ألفية ابن مالك" (الخلاصة في النحو) منظومة جمال الدين ابن مالك الأندلسي الشهيرة في ألف بيت واثنين من الرَّجَز، تستوعب كاملَ علم النحو العربي: الكلمة، والمرفوعات، والمنصوبات، والمجرورات، وأدوات النصب والجزم، وأحكام التطابق والعمل. حُفظت في كلِّ بلاد الإسلام لمدة سبعة قرون، وعليها أكثر من خمسين شرحاً، أبرزها شروح ابن عقيل وابن هشام والأشموني.

عن المؤلف

الإمام جمال الدين محمد بن عبد الله ابن مالك الأندلسي (٦٠٠-٦٧٢ هـ) إمام علم العربية في عصره. ولد بجَيَّان بالأندلس، وارتحل إلى المشرق، واستقرّ بدمشق وفيها مات. له بالإضافة إلى الألفية "الكافية الشافية" منظومةٌ أطول في الموضوع نفسه، وله شروحٌ ومصنّفاتٌ في النحو والصرف.
