Maraqi al-Ubudiyya is Shaykh Nawawi al-Jawi al-Bantani's celebrated commentary on Imam al-Ghazali's Bidayat al-Hidaya — the practical beginner's manual of Sunni spirituality. Working from a manuscript of the Bidaya carried east from Cairo, Nawawi al-Jawi (an Indonesian Shafii master who taught at Mecca for half a century) opens each section of al-Ghazali's text for Malay-speaking students whose first acquaintance with the Sunni-Sufi disciplines came through his lessons. The commentary is particularly lucid in unfolding the inner dispositions of worship — the manners of wudu, of salat, of the daily Quran portion — and in connecting the Ghazalian discipline to the Shafii fiqh tradition.

About The Author

Shaykh Muhammad Nawawi al-Jawi al-Bantani (1230-1316 AH / 1813-1898 CE) was the most influential Indonesian Shafii scholar of the nineteenth century, born in Banten in West Java, who spent the bulk of his teaching career in Mecca. He composed more than thirty commentaries on standard Shafii and Sunni-Sufi works — bridges between the Arabic scholarly tradition and the Malay-Indonesian students who came to Mecca for higher learning. His Tafsir Marah Labid (also called Tafsir Munir) remains among the most-used tafsirs in Southeast Asian Sunni learning.

"مراقي العبودية" شرحُ الشيخ محمد نووي الجاوي البنتني على "بداية الهداية" للإمام الغزالي — الكتاب العملي الأول للمبتدئ في علم التصوّف السنّي. كان الشيخ الجاوي (شافعي إندونيسي درّس بمكّة نصف قرن) قد عَمَدَ إلى الكتاب لِيَفُكَّه لطلبة الجاويين الذين تَعَرَّفوا على علم التصوّف الأوّل مرّةٍ من خلال دروسه. والشرحُ مَكْشُوفُ المعنى في بَسْط الباطن: آداب الوضوء، والصلاة، والورد القرآني — وفي رَبْط أَدَب الغزّالي بفقه الشافعية.

عن المؤلف

الشيخ محمد نووي الجاوي البنتني (١٢٣٠-١٣١٦ هـ) من أعظم العلماء الشافعية الإندونيسيين في القرن التاسع عشر، ولد ببنتن في غرب جاوة، وأَفْنى عمرَه التعليمي بمكّة المكرّمة. صنَّف أكثر من ثلاثين شرحاً على المتون الشافعية والصوفية السنية — جسوراً بين التراث العربي وطلبته الجاويين. وله "تفسير مراح لبيد" المعروف بـ"التفسير المنير" من أوسع التفاسير تَداوُلاً في جنوب شرق آسيا.
