About The Book

Nuqayat al-Ulum (literally "The Selection of the Sciences") is Imam al-Suyuti's compact encyclopedia covering the essential vocabulary and core questions of fourteen Islamic sciences: usul al-din, tafsir, hadith, usul al-fiqh, fiqh, fara'id, nahw, tasrif, kitabat al-khatt, badi, bayan, mantiq, tibb, and tasawwuf. Across a single short volume — typically a few dozen pages — al-Suyuti reduces each discipline to its definition, its foundational principles, and its most distinctive technical terms. The work is remarkable as a conspectus of the entire classical curriculum from a single authoritative hand.

al-Suyuti himself wrote a longer self-commentary — Itmam al-Diraya — explaining and developing the compact text. Nuqayat al-Ulum has been read for centuries by students preparing for advanced study as a single-volume orientation to the entire classical Sunni curriculum.

About The Author

Imam Jalal al-Din Abd al-Rahman al-Suyuti (849-911 AH / 1445-1505 CE) was the supreme Mamluk-era Egyptian polymath, a Shafii master who claimed authorship of more than 500 works across every classical discipline. Among his foundational works are al-Itqan fi Ulum al-Quran, Tadrib al-Rawi (in hadith terminology), and Tarikh al-Khulafa. His ijtihad in the science of tafsir produced both the Tafsir al-Jalalayn (with al-Mahalli) and the encyclopedic al-Durr al-Manthur.

عن المؤلف

الإمام جلال الدين عبد الرحمن السيوطي (٨٤٩-٩١١ هـ) من أعظم علماء الإسلام في عصر المماليك. فقيه شافعي يَدّعي تأليف ما يزيد على خمسمائة كتاب في كلِّ علم. من أمهات كتبه: "الإتقان في علوم القرآن"، و"تدريب الراوي" في مصطلح الحديث، و"تاريخ الخلفاء". اشترك مع المحلّي في تأليف "تفسير الجلالين"، وله "الدر المنثور" في التفسير بالمأثور.
