Sharh al-Bayquniyya

Sharh al-Bayquniyya

About The Book

Sharh al-Bayquniyya is Imam al-Zurqani's commentary on al-Bayquniyya โ€” the celebrated foundational matn of hadith terminology composed by Shaykh Umar b. Muhammad al-Bayquni (d. 1080 AH) in 34 lines of rajaz. The matn enumerates the principal categories of hadith โ€” sahih, hasan, daif, marfu, mawquf, maqtu, musnad, mursal, munqati, mudallas, shadhdh, munkar, and the rest โ€” defining each in a single verse. The commentary unfolds each definition for the beginning student, illustrates it with examples, and clarifies the relations among categories.

For more than three centuries the Bayquniyya has been the universal first text in mustalah al-hadith for beginning students, and al-Zurqani's commentary is among the most-used companions for it.

About The Author

Imam Muhammad b. Abd al-Baqi al-Zurqani (1055-1122 AH / 1645-1710 CE) was an Egyptian Maliki scholar and master of hadith.
