Talim al-Mutaallim Tariq al-Taallum

Talim al-Mutaallim Tariq al-Taallum

About The Book

Talim al-Mutaallim is the foundational classical manual on the manners (adab) of the student of sacred knowledge. Composed by the Hanafi scholar Imam Burhan al-Din al-Zarnuji in the seventh Islamic century, the work covers โ€” in compact didactic prose โ€” the right intention for seeking knowledge, the choice of teacher and subject, the manner of study, the cultivation of memory, the avoidance of what corrupts knowledge, the trust and gratitude that should accompany the seeker, and much more. For more than seven centuries it has been the first text placed before students entering serious madrasa study in the Hanafi-Maturidi tradition.

Continually printed, taught, and translated, it remains widely studied today as a foundational text on Islamic educational ethics. Major commentaries include those of Ibrahim b. Ismail and Ibn al-Khatib.
