About The Book

Talim al-Mutaallim is the foundational classical manual on the manners (adab) of the student of sacred knowledge. Composed by the Hanafi scholar Imam Burhan al-Din al-Zarnuji in the seventh Islamic century, the work covers — in compact didactic prose — the right intention for seeking knowledge, the choice of teacher and subject, the manner of study, the cultivation of memory, the avoidance of what corrupts knowledge, the trust and gratitude that should accompany the seeker, and much more. For more than seven centuries it has been the first text placed before students entering serious madrasa study in the Hanafi-Maturidi tradition.

Continually printed, taught, and translated, it remains widely studied today as a foundational text on Islamic educational ethics. Major commentaries include those of Ibrahim b. Ismail and Ibn al-Khatib.

About The Author

Imam Burhan al-Din al-Zarnuji (7th c. AH / 13th c. CE) was a Hanafi scholar of Transoxiana whose precise dates of birth and death are not known, but who is firmly placed in the early-thirteenth century CE. Beyond Talim al-Mutaallim, his other works do not survive.

"تعليم المتعلم طريق التعلّم" الكتاب التأسيسي في آداب طالب العلم. صنّفه الإمام برهان الدين الزرنوجي في القرن السابع الهجري، وفصَّل فيه — بأسلوبٍ تعليمي موجز — في النية الصادقة في طلب العلم، واختيار الشيخ والمواد، وكيفية الدراسة، وطرق تنمية الحفظ، وما يُفسد العلم، والتوكُّل والشكر اللازَمين لطالب العلم. صار الكتاب — منذ ذلك الحين — أوّل ما يُقَدَّم لطالب العلم في المدارس الحنفية الماتريدية.

عن المؤلف

الإمام برهان الدين الزرنوجي (ق ٧ هـ / ق ١٣م) عالم حنفي من بلاد ما وراء النهر. لا تُعلم تواريخ مولده ووفاته بدقّة، لكنّه من رجال أوائل القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي. لم تَبْقَ من مؤلَّفاته إلا هذا الكتاب.
