About The Book

al-Mizan al-Kubra is Imam Abd al-Wahhab al-Sharani's three-volume comparative-fiqh masterwork — one of the most original contributions to Sunni legal scholarship of the late Mamluk and early Ottoman eras. al-Sharani approaches the differences (ikhtilafat) among the four Sunni schools through a novel hermeneutic he calls the principle of weighty and light positions (al-aqwal al-thaqila wa al-khafifa): each school's positions are arranged on a spectrum from heavier (more demanding of the mukallaf) to lighter, and the believer is shown that the apparent contradictions among the schools actually reflect a single sacred-legal economy in which different positions accommodate different circumstances of the worshipper. The work has had a major influence on subsequent Sunni discussions of madhhab pluralism.

About The Author

Imam Abd al-Wahhab al-Sharani (898-973 AH / 1493-1565 CE) was one of the foremost Egyptian Sufi masters of the late Mamluk and early Ottoman periods. A jurist, hadith scholar, and Sufi shaykh, he founded a zawiya in Cairo that became a major center of Sufi learning.

"الميزان الكبرى الشعرانية" مُؤَلَّف الإمام الشعراني الثلاثي في الفقه المقارن — من أَصْيَل الإسهامات في الفقه السنّي في عصر المماليك المتأخّر وأوائل العثمانيين. يَقْرَأ الشعراني الاختلافات بين المذاهب الأربعة من خلال هَرْمَنوطيقا أصيلة يُسَمِّيها قاعدة الأقوال الثقيلة والخفيفة: تَنْتَظِم أقوال كلِّ مذهبٍ على طيفٍ من الأَثْقَلَ (أَشَدَّ تَكْليفاً للمُكَلَّف) إلى الأَخَفّ، فيَتَّضِح للقارئ أنّ التَّناقُض الظاهر بين المذاهب يَعْكس في الحقيقة اقتصاداً شَرْعياً واحداً يُلائِم كلُّ مَوْقفٍ فيه ظروف العابد. للكتاب أَثَرٌ كبير في مناقشات تَعَدُّد المذاهب اللاحقة.

عن المؤلف

الإمام عبد الوهاب الشعراني (٨٩٨-٩٧٣ هـ) من أعرز مشايخ الصوفية المصرية في عصري المماليك المتأخّرة والعثمانية المبكرة. أسّس زاويةً بالقاهرة صارت مَنارة للتعليم الصوفي.
